WordPress is a very popular Content Management System (CMS) that powers many website from low to high traffic. It is almost 38% of all websites according to WordPress stats on W3Techs.com. But many of those website use wordpress plugins to customise their visitors experience. We will look at some of the most popular plugins out there and the way to install wordpress plugins.

How to install WordPress Plugins – First way

The first method to install a WordPress plugin is the easiest. You should make your way the admin section of your website. Enter your username and password in the login form located on the /wp-admin portion of your respective website.


Once inside the Admin Panel, called the DashBoard, you will see a menu on the right with an item labeled “Plugins” in between the Appearance and Users menu. The Plugins submenu will contain 3 items as shown in the screenshot on the right. The items you can find are Installed Plugins, Add New and Plugin Editor.

The Installed Plugins item is self explanatory; you see the wordpress plugins that are installed on your website. On this page you can activate or deactivate existing plugins, as well as see some description of the plugin, and sometimes support information of the plugin developper.

The last menu item is “Plugin Editor”. This one is rarely used as thei relates to directly editing the PHP source code of the plugin and can easily breka your website if you dont know how to program and the ins and outs of the wordpress plugins system.

Add a New WordPress Plugin

The menu item that interest us, is “Add New”. Clicking on it will bring us to a WordPress store/market of all the available plugins from wordpress developpers and third party companies. Tehy are all free, and most of the time, the they also a paying version with premium Features. So without further ado, let see what it looks like in the WordPress plugins system:

The way I usually do it is first search by keywords for what I need. For instance if I need to install a wordpress plugins for seo, it would search “seo” in the top right search bar. This would bring popular options of plugins that match that keyword, for example:

After this its a matter of clicking “Install Now” on the desired plugins box.

Activate a WordPress Plugin

Next we will need to wait a few seconds and then click the Blue newly appeared button labelled “Activate”. In the following screenshot, the blue button appears in the “Yoast SEO” plugin box.


Once you have clicked the activate button, worpdress will redirect your browser to the plugins list page. Remember the first item menu under plugins. Thats it , you install a plugin in wordpress the easy way.

How To Upload a WordPress Plugin

There is another method adding a wordpress plugin. On the add a plugin page, on the top left corner, you will see a button labelled “Upload Plugin” as shown in the image below:

By Visiting this page you will see a blue Download button. Clicking that button will make you download a zip file to your local computer that you would then upload back to your WordPress Server with the Upload plugin shown above.
